WHAT WE DO
indigenous peoples’ data is key to connecting
who We have been,
who WE are, and
who WE will be.
Our data are our relations. Protecting and stewarding our data is a labor of love that needs collective care.
Explore our core work areas
Our Indigenous Data Alliance operates across five key areas in our approach to gather, sow, and share knowledge and data rooted in Indigenous Peoples’ community values for collective benefit to nourish future generations.
-
We train the next generation of Indigenous Data Warriors to lead data and policy work grounded in Indigenous knowledges, sciences, and priorities. Our programs build critical capacity across Indigenous communities, Tribal governments, educational institutions, and allied organizations to implement Indigenous data governance at every level.
-
We design, develop, implement, and disseminate policy by Indigenous Peoples for Indigenous Peoples. It is not enough to conduct policy research and train individuals to carry it out; it must emerge directly from Indigenous leadership and communities, and be enacted in support of the self-determined futures they seek to build and maintain.
-
We support Indigenous Peoples in creating the legal, technological, and procedural infrastructure needed to exercise full authority over their data. Our work bridges the gap between asserting data rights and operationalizing governance systems that protect them.
-
We transform institutions by embedding Indigenous data governance principles into their policies and practices. From federal agencies to universities and museums, we help institutions move from recognition to action.
-
We grow a cross-community IDSov movement that includes all Indigenous Peoples impacted by US colonialism, including those in “unincorporated US territories” and Tribal nations that lack state or federal recognition. By resisting colonial categories, we strengthen our relations and collective power across borders, learning from and leveraging all of our data stories and strategies.
